Introduction to Islamic Counselling

This course can be offered at MIHE or in another city within the UK as long as there are minimum of 12 participants registered for the course.

The aim of this 3 day course is to provide an understanding of basic factors within Islam that can help to understand the mental health issues and to introduce basic counselling skills.

The course will cover:

      Islam and Counselling
      Listening Skills,
      Nafs

The course is especially useful to counsellors, social workers, advisors, community workers, volunteers, chaplains, imams and helpline advisors.

Entry requirements:

Competency in English


Course Fees:

The course fee is £150 per person for a group of upto 12. For a larger group fees can be negociated (a maximum of 20 people can be accommodated). Please contact the Shortcourses Manager for details.

Course Objectives:

This 3 day practical skills course seeks:

     1. To develop an understanding of students own meaning of Islam, and Nafs.

     2. To learn basic counselling skills


COURSE CONTENT:

Each of the 3 days deals with a number of themes:

Day 1: The students will begin the day by defining the meaning of confidentiality and
making an agreement to ensure that any information shared during the course will be
treated with respect and kept confidential. Students will be encouraged to explore the
concepts of counselling. The course will help to develop essential skills in listening
which are vital in any type of communication especially relating to counselling and
advisory services.

The day will end with an exploration of the concept of the Nafs in the Qur'an.

Day 2: Students will continue to develop their basic counselling skills and will be
providing feedback to each other, as well as learning to paraphrase and reflect client
material.

The day will conclude with an introduction to Psychodynamic Counselling.
Coursework will be handed out.

Day 3: The day introduces the basic concepts of person-centred therapy and Islamic
counselling. The day ends by exploring the qualities one would expect to find in a
counsellor. The day will conclude with an opportunity for any coursework questions
and presenting endings to the course.

Completion of this course will provide appropriate entry requirements for the next
level: Certificate in Islamic Counselling.
